Reluctantly, they followed Oda to her office where the cellarer brought them a pitcher of ale, bread and cheese, and they talked over what little they had learned.

“You said Gilleasp the beggar saw them leave on horseback,” said Cormac, placing some of the rich white cheese a slice of bread. “To attack two mounted men, the attackers were probably on horseback as well and several of them.”

“No ordinary robbers or outlaws then,” pointed out Malcolm. “They must have kent they had valuables on them, but what? And how did they ken that?”

“From the peddlers to the earl’s army?” asked Cormac.

Law shook his head. “They hadn’t arrived yet. If no one saw the man staying at an inn, if as I believe he is nae from Perth, then it was someone who kent him. Mayhap someone who had followed him from outwith Perth. Mayhap they followed him…” Law considered Dave Taylor’s assassin. But why would anyone bring an assassin from Guelders for such a purpose?

They finished their repast and thanked the canoness for her hospitality.

“You will learn nothing more from the poor man until he recovers – if by the grace of the good God he does recover,” said Malcolm.

Law eyed the servant still lackadaisically hoeing and went to have a word with him. A quarter of a penny with a promise of a whole one if he would bring news when the victim recovered, and Law clapped him on the shoulder. “There is much ado in the city. We shall return when there is more to learn.” There was no point in mentioning that might never happen.
